Unless they meant for this to be some sci-fi song about vampires or murder... I'm guessing the "left ventricle..." part(s) are meant to say that his body has gone numb (the left ventricle carries blood to the body); I also think the "...petrified wood" parts that follow are meant to say that his heart would figuratively turn old and stone-like.
But, overall, I think this is a song is about a person that's fallen for and who wants to save a troubled person. The person in the song yearns to be let into their love interest's heart, despite their love interest's warning that they'd just end up cause the person hurt. The person in the song wants to help them, but, at the same time, they also want to make it through the dark time in their relationship.
I also think there are other possible interpretations, of course and it'd be interesting to hear other theories! This is a great song--the best on Hometowns, if not for "Frank, AB"!
both of them want to FEEL something both are attracted to each other
but they both have different views on life and love
and they are both trying to win each other for their own reason
