I think he is realizing his choices that brought him to this point have also left him nothing to return to.I see him regretting his decisions that have led him here. Maybe he is wishing he was still in lust or as the song seems to dictate, in love with Ms. Leading. And when "Prayers from above never answered..." I wonder if he was was guided by his mom's ghost, or the oracles, but either way, went astray from their guidance and is now alone, stuck. I like how he seems to have mood swings, almost as though he is annoyed with himself just as much as he is with Ms. Leading.

As the song continues he puts Ms. Leading in the back of his mind and sees what pain can be caused by war, something even worse than a broken heart. I love it when he describes his first taste of war, and the son's being robbed from their families, a lot of cool imagery there. "Smoke arose on the azimuth glares/ Bodies brewed and frigid winter..." I think of the azimuth as a guiding direction often associated with ships at sea using due north and stars to get a precise angle on which direction to travel. But it is also used for military artillery fire.
