I agree with Imaye83. Someone who's had trouble/problems are coming back. I think "turning black tables" means leaving bad memroies behind (turn away bad memories/experience).
The part where he sings "when the white of your eyes come through, it good to see some thing new", he means that when you look at a hard/difficult sitiuation with a bright, positive view , life will be much better, and you'll see new things.
This explanation also match with "When life in your eyes once black", a person who was struggling with his life, but has gotten better.
Who this person could be is a difficult question, but with my point of view, he could maybe be an ex-drug addict who's got clean, and have to deal with real life again, trying to forget the past.
He could also be a solider, who comes back from war, and also have to deal with the problems.
