To me, the lyrics sound like they're being sung by a person who feels like a puppet ("Honey, can you reach the spots/that need oiling and fixing?", "I pretend these aren't ten strings/tied to all ten of my fingers") in that she is being controlled by another person. In the other lyrics, she expresses her desperate desire to escape, and also to be less vulnerable ("...a spine made up of iron").
Also, this song is excellent! As is the rest of the album.
yeah, i think that makes sense too. and after watching the music video, i think its about Christianity and atheism. the belief of Christianity could be what is controlling her as a puppet. i think its supposed to be sort of ironic how she is repeating how the body works and how it is controlled in scientific terms, even though it is supposed being controlled by god. she has figured out the truth and now that she knows how things really are, other people are starting to follow her. nearing the end of the video, you see people fighting and...
