I love this song... It's very simple and yet so strong. Obviously he is trying to convince himself he doesn't need her as much, and has to be glad for leaving her. But then, he simply realises that it's not true, and that he loves her, despite leaving her. He was only convincing himself, since she had walked away, being much colder than he could ever have been.
(I believe he had left her as he said: "I swapped my innocence for pride, crushed the end within my stride; said I'm strong, but now I know that I'm a leaver")
