i absolutely love this song but the meaning somewhat confuses me. After much thought i've come to two possible conclusions:
1) The song is about a girl
'Cause the rockets we're in, get so cold and I miss your skin
--and/or--
2) Some parts are God talking to His people...
If you want my love, well you've got to get close to me
If you need my love, well you've got to get closer to me
~its like God saying that you have to keep getting closer and closer to Him
...and some parts are a human talking to God
I don't understand why we can't get close enough
I want your kite strings tangled in my trees all wrapped up

I agree with you except on the last part. I've always taken this be God talking to His people. I think sometimes, at least for me anyways, we can distance ourselves from God because we don't think He really wants to know about our problems (tangled kite strings). I think this is Him saying that "no, I want to help you and know you and be closer to you." That last line does seem to imply a person to God though. I don't know exactly what it means, I could be completely off base. Just thought I'd share. :)
