Some people are always trying to project this image for themselves. tough, smart, strong, cool. But the reason they want this image is that they are really insecure about themselves. So to cover it up, they tell you and tell you and keep telling you that they are really tough, or smart, or cool, etc. There comes a point where you're like, dude, you're trying too hard! you're trying really hard to look tough, but your trying is what gives you away!
