I think this song is about a marriage that went bad, with the girl cheating on her husband.

"Do you remember how you wore that dress? it slit my sight beneath the eyelids do you remember what you said to me? what course has given you the right to stray?"

This first stanza is rather easy to interpret. He asks her if she remembered how she wore her dress, which I assume is the wedding dress. But in a way, it's more than just how she wore it, it's how she felt when she wore it: that she would always be faithful to him, that she loved him, all that stuff. He remembers how beautiful she looked (slit the eyelids, he can see her beauty even through closed eyes) and asks her if she remembered what she said (maybe wedding vows?) and asks her what happened between them that made her cheat on him.

"And in your living tomb I'm stuck but safe the clocks are ticking fast with every breath"

This could mean that in their house he's hurt, but safe at the same time. He finds comfort in his house, even though he shares it with her. The clocks part might be a reference to a ticking time bomb, that being symbolic for a divorce that he will go through.

"Since we've been wrong I've been part awake since we've been wrong you will never, ever know me"

He realizes here that they were wrong about their feelings, that since she cheated on him he realized that he doesn't love her, and it keeps him up at night.

"What took you so long I'm not sure all the way but my heart, it asks just one more time

Are you still a mess"

This part, I think, is one of the most powerful parts of the song. He asks her what took her so long to tell him, or to explain why she did what she did, but he still has feelings for her that he can't shake off, hence "are you still a mess?"

"One day a rain will come to wash away the earth that held us was no island I have become ingrown inside this skin I'll find a way out through those eyelids"

He's waiting for something to come and help him out of his predicament like the rain washing it away, but realizes that marriage isn't like an island. An island seems appropriate because you can't really get off an island by yourself, you need help (or a divorce), but he knows that he can walk away from it now. The lyric with "ingrown inside this skin" could signify that he is starting to become accustomed to being with her even though she cheated on him, but that he still wants a way out of it in the end (find a way out.....)

"And all the days become a castaway I seem to think I don't belong here"

In the back of his mind, he thinks of all the days he spent with her, loving her, and how they seem wasted now that he knows she was unfaithful. He feels like he doesn't belong there in the marriage with her.

The chorus I already explained.

"I don't belong here, I shouldn't stay what falls inside me grows empty the walls between us will never break just seal it shut, it grows empty"

The other powerful part of this song, I think. He knows now that he doesn't have to be in the relationship, and decides that he won't. He's put up emotional walls between her and him, and when she tries to tear them down and fix her mistakes, he tells her that they will never go away, and that she needs to stop trying and leave him alone.

More chorus, followed by the last lyric. "Are you still a mess?"

Fucking beautiful song.

Hi, I think that's a really nice interpretation you made. That's my remarks:

"the earth that held us was no island"

It may mean, that he thought they were alone, just two of them on an island separated from the rest of the world, and it turned out that there was someone else (or even more of them).

"And all the days become a castaway"

It seems to me that it's a metaphore of days that became separated from rest of their lives, days that are lost and cannot be found again.

"Since we've been wrong I've been part awake"

I think that could also mean that he's "waken up" from a dream or lie he was living with her. The "part" awake would be because he isn't fully awake yet - he still loves her and would like things to be the way they used to be.
