I like seeing the meanings people have put up but I had sort of a different interpretation. To me it never actually had to do with a marriage, he only is thinking of the future "I contemplate the day we wed." I thought it was just the fact that although he knew they were not going to work out, he continues to tell her what she wants to hear to keep her happy because he truly does love her "I lie for only you, and I lie well." And instead of hurting her now and telling her he doesn't see them ever making it happily in the future he is just going to wait for the day when they fall apart "If today's the day it gets tired, today's the day we drop out." And I always wondered what the "wasting words on lower cases and capitals" was all about...but I think it may actually have to do with actually writing the song. He writes down his feelings with lower cases and capitals but he feels he's wasting the words because he's not actually telling the girl he loves his true feelings.
