I think this song is about a girl who feels so completely lost, and as if she is insignificant - she does not matter to anyone. Until of course, at the end, she finally meets someone who understands her and hows she feeling. Meeting them changes her, and makes her finally feel worthwile. I always interpreted it as the singer is the one who meets the girl and makes her feel better about herself :) As for the interpretation of the writing, I took it to mean she was writing it in a diary.
