I think it's: "Was that in '84? Not sure." Not "Was 1984. Not sure."

It makes more sense and sounds right to me. Also, the line "She's a genus and a Venus" doesn't make sense as written. How can one be a "genus", yet all lyric sites seem to show it like that. When I heard it, I thought it was: "She's a genus à la Venus" which makes a lot more sense. He's saying she's the same type of girl as Venus/Aphrodite, one of the most beautiful women in Greek Mythology.

My Opinion

Yeah, "She's a genus a la Venus" would make sense. But I always thought the lyrics was "She's a genus out of Venus", which also makes sense.

The lyrics on their official video (http://youtu.be/140ea47ndME) are the corrects one!

They do indeed say "was that in '84?" And the other part is "genius out of Venus," so FROM the planet Venus, meaning she's a woman, I guess (with the whole "men are from Mars, women are from Venus" cliche).

Actually, I think I was thinking of a different interpretation of the lyrics I had looked at re: the "genius out of Venus" line. I know I've seen lyrics that interpreted it that way. I've submitted an updated set of lyrics based on the lyrics included with the video. And honestly, although "genius" makes more sense, the lyrics DO sound like they say "genus and a Venus." Oh well. No one ever said it had to make sense.
