i think this is about young summer love.

obviously the first verse shows how "perfect" and happy their relationship is. although he focuses on her and her happiness, it shows how ideal and beautiful their time together is. however i think he focuses on her to more effectively show how things changed and the consequences of his feelings for her [both good and bad].

he then has a more serious second verse in which obviously they say goodbye. I think that maybe distance has a factor, but i think that he lost feelings for her, and when summertime ends and they have to say goodbye, they can't leave as friends because she's so in love with him and he's not. Also, the second line "Things were promised in blood; we have sinned." implies that maybe she lost her virginity to him [hence the blood and saying that they have sinned because of pre-marital sex]. This also adds to why they wouldn't be able to leave as friends. obviously the last 2 lines show how upset she is about the parting but how he seems to be a bit apathetic about the whole situations... turning numb to the sound.

the next verse, when he says "innocence doesn't mean we're immune to these things" i think he is saying because they were naively "in love", doesn't mean that it disregards reality. he just kind of engaged in this relationship because it was fun at the time, and even though he had innocent and pure intention, it doesn't mean that he can't still hurt her. saying that truth costs more than he can spare right now, and that its simpler for him to lie, shows that he knows that telling her the truth will be way to painful for her and that maybe lying will be easier. which is why i think he says he'll blame the passage of time, which also implies the long distance summer fling- their relationship ended because the time had passed and it was time for him to leave, at least that's what he wants her to believe

finally i think that the chorus describes how his feelings change over time and how reality begins to set in. like autumn leaves change colors, his feelings for her changed, and then chilly winter comes "breathing" the cold harsh reality that he doesn't love her anymore. and the "snow" that kind of separates their paths [if you think of a heavy snowstorm, you get snowed in and can't get to certain places]. however he says that wherever she goes and all that he knows about their relationship [aka what he learned from this whole experience] is that beautiful things don't last, you can experience them for a second but sooner or later some form of reality sets in and changes it.

overall its a GORGEOUS song and i think ron pope is a GENIUS! his music is so soulful and meaningful. plus his voice is sooooo beautiful! you can really hear the emotion behind it
