To me, this song is about someone trying to control another person's life, and that person can't take it anymore. I mostly get this meaning from it because it pretty much describes my life.
"I never claimed to be something more than me,
your standards are something that I refuse to see,
I will answer only to myself,
so why don't you police someone else"
To me, it sounds like he is telling someone who was probably close to him at some time, that he doesn't agree with their lifestyle. He claimed to be more than him, meaning from the start the other should have known who he was and they couldn't change him. Refusing to see their standards, he just doesn't want their lifestyle. The rest of the verse is him telling them to basically just leave him alone.
"the place I call home isn't there anymore,
with boards on the windows and locks on the door,
so pick up the pieces that never once fit,
let this be the end of it"
Home is a place where you are happy, calm, and safe. Now, imagine coming home and finding boards on the windows and locks on the door, that peaceful place is ruined now. Now looking at it less literally, this could just mean that home, or whatever place it is that you loved so much, has turned into hell pretty much. This doesn't HAVE to be home, it could be work, a club, a relationship etc, really just whatever fits your situation. The final part of the chorus where he picks up the pieces that never once fit, this could mean gathering his things to get out of this place, thus letting it be the end of the madness going on there.
"once you held a place for me,
but now that I've left you went and gave up my seat,
don't expect me to share your visions of life,
I'll take the my chances somewhere else"
The person had a place for him to stay, but as soon as he was gone he gets replaced by someone else, since now that he's left they "gave up his seat," which means that really he was expendable and they didn't care about him much in the first place. For the rest of the verse, he is just further stating that he's not going to accept their lifestyle and he's leaving.
"give me the green light to get on with my life,
pick up the pieces then roll the fucking dice"
Here, he's stating that he's moving on in life. The roll the dice part could mean he's just going to take a chance, rather than going back to the person, even though he might fail without them.
"I live in exile of you, your key no longer fits,
because the locks on my life are new"
He's found a new place to call home now, a place where the person's key no longer fits, meaning they can't get into his life and try to control him anymore. The locks on his life being new further state this.
This is just how I see it. The thing with the Native Americans (their NOT Indians >_>) makes sense, but I just like my interpretation a bit more.
