This song works better when listening to "What For" as well. The pair are my favorite from the album.

"I can never win with you I try, but you don't let me through Well, what's the point in fighting when we're done?"

This is a relationship that has already ended, and the singer is attempting to mend it in some way.

"Well, I don't know what to say Every word just makes you turn away And I don't know what to do Every day I wanna be with you Well, I've lost the battle and I'm losing the war And I keep on asking myself what for If you believe in fate and destiny Well, then open your eyes and believe in me Believe in me Believe in me"

The singer attempts to apologize and make amends, but it only seems to be pushing their love interest further away. No matter what he does, she seems to grow more distant from him with every move he makes. The song "What For" is referred to in the chorus, letting us know that the two songs are dealing with the same relationship. This lets us know that "What For" isn't actually a song contemplating a breakup, but rather regreting it after the fact. The singer almost attempts to warn himself before he makes the mistake, despite it already having happened.

"I call up and apologize But you just think it's one big lie Well, don't know you're pushing me away?"

She either doesn't believe he's sincere, or is afraid of having her heart broken by him again. Meanwhile the singer is slowly losing hope after every rejection.

"We've been through so much together You can't tell me the past will never mean a thing It's more than a memory"

He's hoping she'll remember all of the positive times in their relationship, and relaize there is some good left between them.

"'Cause every one I see around Tells me that I'm such a fool For making you my punching bag When things really weren't that bad"

He didn't treat her well at the end of the relationship, which he regrets, because things could have easily been mended in comparison to his current standings with her. He believes breaking up with her was an overreaction to minor problems.

"I've lost you now I've lost you now (I've lost you now) And I don't know how to get you back I'm not myself I'm not myself I gotta get us back on track"

He's realized that she will never forgive him and there is nothing he can do to change that. The last two lines indicate he wants to move on if he can't have her.

[Edit]: The last line makes it seem he is determined to win her back, not him moving on.
