I remember a blog or website posting by Joey Cape before this album came out, and he said that the words for this song were written by Derrick Plourde. They were in a book of poetry that he had been writing in. I can't recall the exact situation, but I think Derrick's mom gave the book to Joey after Derrick passed away, and he felt compelled to somehow use these particular lyrics on the album somehow. The music was composed afterward to go with Derrick's words.
As for the meaning of the song, "This Vehicle" is a metaphor for Derrick's self. It's a poem he wrote
about the difficulties in his life that ultimately led to his demise. An appropriate inclusion for the album. At face value, it's not the greatest song. But I have a greater amount of appreciation for it, knowing the background behind it.
