can't it just be about what's important to everyone? "everyone has their obsession." it can mean something different for everyone listening, so if an atheist is listening, i seriously doubt their obsession will be God. i'm not that religious-oriented, so the way i see this song is everyone values something in their life, and he's talking about whatever person he values. "objects of affection" and "always one addiction" don't really make god pop into my mind, but maybe that's just me.
