Well, my interpretation of this is pretty far-fetched, but it immediately came to my mind and it kind of stuck.
I think it's about a group of children, and the narrator is one of them, and their orphans, their parents left them.
It could be that they are all siblings coming from the same mother and father, or they are just connected because they all feel the same thing in common: abandonment.
