Anyways this is probably not right but..
it sounds like they were in love and then he started to think something was missing so he broke it off with her. Now he realizes how much he cared about her and how she kept him happy and how she cared for him. Now he's given up on himself for his poor decision to leave her. However, he still has all the happy memories and no one can take that from him.
