This song is not about the end of a romantic relationship. It is the end of the belief in God. According to Alex Kapranos:
"The breakup songs are things like “Bite Hard,” and that’s a breakup with God, not a breakup with a woman. It's sung from my perspective, but its more about if you decide, or choose, to live without God, it’s worse than any kind of emotional breakup you could have with somebody, in a way."
Oh wow, I like this meaning so much better! A lot of the lines make more sense. Some lines don't however. What about "I'd never resort to kissing your photo, honest?" Not expecting you to know, but a cool little bit of info there.

I agree with Hannah. I've believed the lyric does refer to the author's faith maybe. The title could be a reference to biting the proverbial apple which resulted in Adam and Eve being banished from the Garden of Eden...away from God like Hannah said. Also, Heston with a beard is possibly a reference to Charlton Heston's portrayal of Moses in the 10 commandments. Which gives some meaning to lines about dying Gods etc.
