This is the Regina Spektor I love. This is proof that she hasn't lost her touch from Soviet Kitsch. She can put out really great music that's not all bubbly pop and juvenile.

I think this song is about one's connection with God and the fear of losing that faith. The part about people not reciting poems these days for the shame would be like how many people don't always want to talk publically about their religions because they fear critism. And she does not want to get to that point. Also, the "What if each to his own lonely grave" and then the "I don't want to live without you" is more of the fear that after death there is nothing else. But that's just my interpretation..
