For me, its about some guy who has to "pull the trigger" on his girlfriend because its not working out, and he thinks they should be separated for a while until they can either make up or just forget about it.
"Some would put the blame on you" probably means that some of his friends and family blame her for the relationship problems.
For the confidently dreaming part, he wants so badly to dream of her "confidently" and pretend everything's ok, but he won't escape that feeling that something is wrong just to keep the relationship. He thinks all she has to do is love to fix things, which she probably is not doing.
