yes a beautiful song indeed. one of his best (one of the best period imo)

i also have always gotten the vibe of it being about somebody with some sort of mental issues (or somebody who has some personal demons to work out). so weather already there or bought on about by outside forces. or both. and the wanting to connect with them in spite of it all, wanting to bust the mindset they're in. wanting the message to reach their heart. but it's hard cause theres many things standing in the way of that happening. the person in the trouble has a messed up mindset weather they were born this way, or raised this way, or something had happen to them in the past to cause it, or they got this way because of drugs, or hanging with the wrong crowd (whatever the case may be). just whatever they got going on in their life in standing in the way. of really being able to make that really good strong bond with them that he would like to. and because of that he feels a lot of empathy towards this person in question.

that's the main point here. now it may or may not have been somebody he knew all that well. i could see it both ways. sorta. but ya know it doesn't sound like he ever really got thru to this person. they may have died and this is him remembering it and going over it. it could be somebody out there he knew or wanted to know better and just grew apart from or never really got to know as well as he would have liked because of this.

and for that matter and this is maybe pushing it a bit. but it could be about himself looking into a mirror and not feeling in touch with himself. but telling himself over and over again that it's all in your (my) mind and not to worry. and not to get to carried away with things and to calm down.

it is a very calming song. almost lullaby-ish in it's slow, sleepiness, reaching out for some hugging arms.

the vinyl version that mr 1977 was talking about is also my favorite version of this song as well (tho it's a good song in any version but yea that was the original and i like it best as well) i have the record in fact and i don't have many records nor a record player at the moment either. i hear that one first. the sea chance has grown on me to but ya know the first you hear gets to become "the" version, maybe. ah. i don't know that one is very special. so i can see how somebody could go 10 years not hearing it and remembering that magic it had to it (more so than any other version. tho like i said in any version this is nice no doubt) this version is also now on the deluxe version of the One Foot in The Grave album now as well.

:)
