I think this song is about the fact that African-American women are mostly taught to be independent. Even though we can do basically everything ourselves, like kill spiders, pay bills and whatnot, we still need men, specifically African-American men. I think she gets more specific when she talks about raising a child. While she can raise him to be the best person he can be, only a man can teach a boy how to be a man. This song basically talks about the fact that there are such high percentages of black men that do not take care of their children, whether they're in jail or simply just don't care.

I like the fact she just flat out says, "I need you." "We need you." As a black woman, I've been raised to believe that I don't need a man to make my life. And while I can do what I need and want to do, I will still have that need for a man to be a man, whether it's my father, brother, husband, boyfriend, whatever.

Jill Scott did an amazing job with this song.

Wow, greatly stated, Loveablel06. As an African American women, we are taught to be independent; to not have to depend on a man to have and maintain our lifestyle. However, I think that Jill is being very vulnerable and transparent in saying that "yes I am independent, but there are still some things that I can't do on my own... I need a man." One of those things, as she addresses, is raising a male child. As women, we can not teach men how to be men; it takes men to do that. I absolutely love this song!!!...
