I think the runaway has died and his body is to be reunited with his family in colorado, hence homweard bound. I think the phrase "carry him down" refers to pall bearers. It's a really beautiful song.

The song is actually called Waiter At The Station. It was written by Jemima James, and is best known for being sung by her son, Willy Mason, who supported Kweller at some gigs a few years ago.

Apparently it was inspired by a body found at a railway station. The Colorado reference may be significant, as Mrs James lives on Martha's Vineyard, and it is common for itinerant tourism workers to summer on the island, and winter in the ski resorts of Colorado.
