I've read some interview with Brian Molko where he mentioned that he used to be a fan of Star Trek.
This song was definetly inspired by the same titled Star Trek episode. The Story: Lazarus is a time traveller and he's being chased by an other lazarus who came from an alternative dimension. They look the same way but one of them has lost his mind and trying to kill the other one. (I do not remember well but I think it's because he can not accept the fact that an other one of him exists.) According to Spock's (a character in Star trek) speech about material and anti material, if these two would get in touch in any of the two dimensions, then space and time would collapse. At the end of the episode the sane Lazarus sacrifices himself: he tells the captain to shoot the time machine while they are both inside it, and the two get stuck between the dimensions -where is no material and time - destined to fight for all eternity.
(so they are caught in a trap that they can not escape :) )
