This song has alot to do with what I'm going through at the moment (or what I perceive the song to be).
For me he's saying that he always walked the path that was laid out for him, and never strayed from it. He did everything he was told. Then she showed up and showed him how he should be living. That he should make his own decisions, and despite all of that he still walked the straightest of lines to stay with what was the norm. In the end it came to never doing what made him happy, or choosing to follow her and do what he always wanted to although it wasn't popular or easy.
