I understand that each song on this album is apart of a bigger story but I'm pretty sure this particular song is about a failed marriage in which one of the partners simply didn't try to save it and gave up.
"...excited to be a part of this union." - I tend to consider union to be more aptly applied to a marriage than a crew.
"They...vowed to be there no matter what, in sickness, health, and...death." - This is straight out of a marriage ceremony.
"As time passed by, there was no new land to be found. As the days grew shorter, and the nights grew longer and colder, the crew became more and more skeptical about the captain's vision." - This sounds like a marriage that is drifting apart.
"Originally passionate and committed, true and faithful, they now began to revolt." - "Passionate", "Committed", "Faithful", this person has fallen out of love and is revolting by stepping out on the marriage.
"He asked them why Their minds had changed There's no gold to be found No treasure in the ground We won't die for this We won't die for you" - metaphor
"if you don't try, you fail" - giving up on the marriage
"This union, a battle fought and lost
This union was not about the cause
This union was never about love
This union, this union" - bla bla bla, you get what I'm saying
