I guess I'll take a crack at this.

"There are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life Ive loved them all"

I think here he's referring to the places he's been, and obviously his friends and people in past relationships. He's saying that he still remembers them and that he loved them all, no matter what.

"But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more"

Now I think he's saying that out of all his friends and people from past relationships, he won't remember them as much as he remembers someone more special to him. Perhaps his wife, maybe a family member. And then I think he's saying that no matter how much he thinks of people and things that came before this person, he'll love them more.

"Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more In my life I love you more"

I think he's saying here that even though he'll never lose his love for past friends and things, he loves this special person more.

So basically, in my point of view, it's him saying that now matter what comes in his life, this special person [ or thing ] is first in his heart.

Well, this might not be the exact meaning, but it's what I think it is, so... yeah.
