I think the narrator is trying to cover up a past love who hurt them with someone else (I got this big, big hole in my heart\ I wanted (I wanted) to put you in.), but the new one ends up being the farthest thing from what they need and breaks what's left of their heart again by wanting them for nothing more than sex rather than actually repairing what's broken in them (But for some reason you just wouldn't fit; Lust kept giving men so many regrets/ Just this once is what we tell ourselves.)
It could also be a back and forth reflection between what the past lover did to the narrator and what the present one simply can't fix, no matter how hard they try. Either way, the meaning seems rather sorrowful. . .but the new album is beautiful.
