The drug and alcohol connection makes most sense to me, but to be completely honest, the first thing that came to mind when I heard this song was his relationship with God. I know Smile Empty Soul is not a religious/Christian band, but that's the way I interpreted it at first. I like that view the most even though it's probably not the true meaning.
