Seems like he's made a terrible mistake by separating from someone who had been close to him previously.
Somehow it brings to me a thought of a relationship in which the guy realises that it is not what he needs and what he seeks in life. But when he tells his girlfriend that he's leaving, she tells him something important, perhaps that she is expecting a child (his child!) and this changes the whole perspective to him. Still what's been said has been said and now it causes a lot of pain to both of them.
