I feel this song is about first love, and the tribulations of growing up in a poor and religious environment, being 11 or 12, and discovering your own sexuality. There's a certain level of mischievousness in the lyrics, like the narrator is horny.
"Mama, go to church now" is just an oldtimey way of saying "mom, we're out of mustard... you should go buy some at the supermarket", so that the narrator can be alone, either with himself, or with a young lover.
