Lyric discussion by mattjay

I think that this song may be about the history of racism in the former Oregon city of Albina. Albina was consolidated into Portland in 1891, and in the 1960's four out of five black Portlanders lived in the Albina neighborhood. It is still a predominately black neighborhood today.

I think this song is speaking to the subtle racism that is gentrification and happening at a rapid pace in the North/Northeast neighborhoods of portland. I also think it is an aknowledgement of the so-called "creative culture" that is taking over these neighborhoods. How does a young musician remain hip, pay rent and attemp social conciousness? Oh I know- write a song about gentrification.
