We Are Scientists are big baseball fans so I think this song is about a baseball game. The baseball star is a thrower (pitcher) The guy who throws the balls. He is starting to become a terrible player "But who could predict the force of the throw?"

He is thinking of changing a career. He is a good baseballer so he is a good sportsman also. He thinks he can transfer his athletic prowers to swimming "To learn to swim, or learn to die, Are choices I have been left with." But if he can't his family will not earn money so he will die - these are the two choices.

"The stress and the strain are starting to show" - he is slowly becoming better at baseball but his fans think that he is pretending to be bigger/better than he was in the minor league, so they begin to rush the ground. But the modern day fencing is too high - they hit it with a log/shovel etc - the stress/strain of their force on the fence is starting to show.

It's natural selection, - he is selected for the next baseball season cause he has talent i.e. he is a natural - it's NATURAL (him) selection.

"so I suggest that we just stop." - he is warning people not to chase the dream of being a professional if they are not a natural. Also, stop drugs in baseball (maybe, not too sure about this one)

My interpretation, if anyone has anything to add feel free.

You know you lost me. I mean you had me that it's the baseball team but thinking of changing a career or even a single person? That I don't agree with. To learn to swim or learn to die is a metaphor such as it's do or die, sink or swim, ect ect.

Honestly I think it's about one game. The singer's team was winning but now the other team is making a comeback.

Let me break it down how I see it.

"The bigger the break the harder the fall" You catch a break but when you fall you fall...
