We Are Scientists are big baseball fans so I think this song is about a baseball game. The baseball star is a thrower (pitcher) The guy who throws the balls. He is starting to become a terrible player "But who could predict the force of the throw?"
He is thinking of changing a career. He is a good baseballer so he is a good sportsman also. He thinks he can transfer his athletic prowers to swimming "To learn to swim, or learn to die, Are choices I have been left with." But if he can't his family will not earn money so he will die - these are the two choices.
"The stress and the strain are starting to show" - he is slowly becoming better at baseball but his fans think that he is pretending to be bigger/better than he was in the minor league, so they begin to rush the ground. But the modern day fencing is too high - they hit it with a log/shovel etc - the stress/strain of their force on the fence is starting to show.
It's natural selection, - he is selected for the next baseball season cause he has talent i.e. he is a natural - it's NATURAL (him) selection.
"so I suggest that we just stop." - he is warning people not to chase the dream of being a professional if they are not a natural. Also, stop drugs in baseball (maybe, not too sure about this one)
My interpretation, if anyone has anything to add feel free.
You know you lost me. I mean you had me that it's the baseball team but thinking of changing a career or even a single person? That I don't agree with. To learn to swim or learn to die is a metaphor such as it's do or die, sink or swim, ect ect.

Honestly I think it's about one game. The singer's team was winning but now the other team is making a comeback.

Let me break it down how I see it.
Let me break it down how I see it.
"The bigger the break the harder the fall"
You catch a break but when you fall you fall...
"The bigger the break the harder the fall"
You catch a break but when you fall you fall hard obviously.
"The hits in this case are too close to call"
It's to close to call whos going to win.
"The stress and the strain are starting to show"
Pressure is building people are getting really stressed out.
"This all has to end, and I oughtta know""
It has to end or their done for.
"Soon they will come and pass us by,"
As in points.
"a shift in tone, and rise in tide."
The other team is making a come back
"To learn to swim, or learn to die"
It's sink or swim for the team
The line it's natural suggestion just says that it's survival of the strongest and apparently their team lost so they should just stop.
