I studied advanced United States history in high school, and learned that the Puritan witch hunt was actually--or at least may have been--a conspiracy resulting from contempt among the economic classes. Poorer people who disliked certain richer people accused them of being witches, and since magic was considered absolutely evil in such communities, the only punishment for an alleged witch was death.
