I guess the parent idea makes sense, but there's something about the subtext here I can't shake..

Seems to me like he's talking about a girl/childhood friend he loved. They'd just mess around during the summer, but they didn't get to see each other that often-- and at some point they realized they were getting older and 'went a bit too far' emotionally. But it didn't work out. The chorus, I would say, brings this reminiscing full-circle: The creek they'd hang out at is gone now, and their relationship dried up with it.
