I think this song is about how people always want to know all of the answers like " what's the meaning of life?" and "is there a god?" but I think less than jake is saying that if you knew the answers, you would probably change the way you live your life, and who knows if that would be for the better or the worst?

those convictions would probably change because you would either live the way you always dreamed of or be extremely careful so you could go to heaven or the afterlife of other religions.
