No comments so far on perhaps my favourite song of all time? My take on it: the man is travelling through life, making many mistakes along the way. He pretends, or perhaps believes that the past, the people he hurt don't matter to him, he was not at fault. He travels light, not carrying the burden of painful memories. This, of course, is a farce as the woman can see through his facade. She can see that he is running from the past, but that he can't escape the guilt of his actions. He carries all his emotional baggage, all his pain with him. Stunning song. Anybody else have a different take on it?
Great lyrics, great song. I agree with your interpretation. 3 years late but I couldn't leave you there on your own, wondering can it be true that nobody else loves this one? I do. Sure some others do too. But most look and remain silent.

Well let me just jump in, many years and months late: this song's meaning is pretty much right there, not as mysterious as some of their others. First he's getting away with "I'm travelling light" i.e. I ain't got NO baggage. She let's him get away with that until she can't anymore, reminding him of how he tortures himself (Chinese water torture) and, no honey, you ain't traveling light at all, you got more baggage than you know. But does denial give in to acceptance? It seems not. Pain and suffering anguish on and on.
I didn't care for the video too much. I get the concept of the regular-day scenery of the imaginary couple in the song. I would have preferred a more live performance, like a more gentle and mourning version of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way.
