Its obviously reffering to somebody who has an alcohol problem. The guy doesn't love the girl he's with, but when he's so afraid to be alone and the drink has left him with nothing so he might as well do this girl. Its tearing them both apart, but he knows she still has a chance to escape and makes something of herself. And he wants her to try and fulfill her dreams. :]
