The main repetitive line (the thrill is gone) means that any positive emotion is any positive emotion has left their relationship. Thrill being happiness, social fun, sex or any number of things.

First callback: He felt hurt or betrayed by an action - cheating, or perhaps just allowing the relationship to disintegrate through boredom. He also feels that eventually she'll miss him, or he'll be an example of her failure through his future attempts at finding a working relationship.

Second Callback: He does still have positive feelings and memories of her, but he has to live without her, despite his instincts to the contrary, or at the very least, instincts for social validation and liveliness

Third Callback: He feels too hurt to try and break the loneliness from verse 2, and hopes with time that all the negative feelings holding him back will be suppressed for another try at romance

Final Verse: He feels relieved that all the things preventing him from leaving her are over, but at the same time, he feels like it's the mature thing to do to let her go, wish her good luck on her future endevours and all that, even though in the first verse he was clearly resenting her. Perhaps his emotional state has changed...anger, sadness, acceptance...

Overall, the song is about a man coming to terms with a toxic relationship. Perfect song.
