I may be completely wrong, and i think i have over thought this song i just love it so much i cant help but want to understand every line
it seems to be broken down into sections about lucia and lavinia. Lucia is his true love, but she is dead. Lavinia is his 'sweet' and he lusts, maybe even loves her but nothing compared to how he feels for Lavinia.
The first stanza talks of his love, Lucia, asleep on the floor in a familiar pose. i reckon this means she is dead, but he cannot come to terms with this, as he continues to talk as if to her throughout the song. I think the second bit.. 'see my son..' is as if he has had a difficult life, almost been through war, and he battle has not killed him which he wants as to be reunited with Lucia. he questions why he is not dead from this whereas Lucia seems to have died in her sleep.
Next, he says he has a change in mind, potentially killing himself to be with Lucia, and this would be due to the fact Lucia, who he seems to continually talk to, is calling him to join her.
The second bit he starts talking about Lavinia, he wants to join Lucia as he cant live beside Lavinia. He can lust after her when he is within her, however he does not love her like he loves Lucia. He would want to live by Lucia's side.
The third stanza is about the feelings for Lucia he has tried to bury over the years, and accepts that he cant stop thinking about Lucia, she is callinhg him all the time, he is continually thinking of her name (where it says i have her name in mine, its calling all the time). The floor reference in this also links back to when lucia was 'asleep on the floor', so since she has been buried, so has his years, as if he has floated through them without noticing. He says these feeling of love could have regrown for Lavinia, however his heart is still with Lucia so as long as she is dead he will always love her and never love Lucia.
The last bit is pretty self explanitory, he loves Lucia, she is dead in the darkness and silence and he cannot have her. So plans to leave here soon and join her.
Wow, i probably have read way too much into this, the lengths i go to avoid revision ha.
