i agree with you, underthestars32, about alcohol and sex, but id say its trying to compensate for lost love. especially the last 2 verses:

Goodnight Palace of pleasure Good morning blues I guess we'll never know What could've been The dream is over Go back to sleep again

the 2nd last verse alludes to the lost love, saying that he had been sleeping with a better girl than he is now, and the last verse is saying goodbye to the old, seemingly euphoric ways of love. the dream is over (love), and he is trying to go back to sleep (re-find it in all the old places)

idk this is just my interpretation, probably just because i can relate to this view.
