I think that they both had valid points and that it makes even more sense if you tie them together. If the "you" in the song was actually some sort of god or higher power.
"here's where I disappeared
where I fell off the pier
and to be rescued I did wait"
He's waiting to be rescued but ends up disappointed and losing faith because help doesn't arrive.
"you can't be found when the bell rings
you weren't there that day for the naming of things"
I'm probably reading too much into this but it seems to make sense if you reread the lyrics with that thought in mind.
