I always pictured her falling in love with a Selkie. It explains (to me anyways) all the references to water, besides the fact that they're obviously on the coast on an island. The lines that put this meaning in my head was "Suddenly, I knew that you'd have to go./Your world was not mine, your eyes told me so" because a Selkie was not capable of living out of the water for long periods of time. The sea always called them home.
