rather, it sounds like he's incredibly lonely, hence incredibly unhappy.
he seems to cope with this by trying to fill his empty heart with material objects and convincing himself that he's found 'love' in them.
as for "andrea", misery loves company.
it's like, they're both in the same boat, so they keep each other company, maybe have loveless relations.
