I believe this song is trying to convey that sometimes in all the confusion of deciding what to do with our lives, we often get misled into a materialistic life.
Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes Im too scared to even try
Hashing through the possibilities
They seem as endless as the sky
You seek the truth and the quiet breeze
But the air is too thin to reply
While floating down the river of life, you see the different possibilities. You wish for something (god, etc) to tell you what to do, but nothing replies.
Swinging on the trees are living in a confused and materialistic life.
Distant notions of subtle residue
Cling to minds from our past
Tell us what is what and who made who
But times events move us too fast
We're shaped by our upbringing, life goes by fast.
Simple sentiments whisked away by anxious steel wool
Struggling to content ourselves with what we think best
That what makes happy of which we seem never full
Is actually more than plenty though it is already possessed
Our emotions and dreams are wiped away by a demanding society that makes us live for the dollar. We try to make ourselves happy with the things in this world, things that will never truly make us happy no matter how much we have, things that we already have enough of.
Well I know thats where Ill never be
Because I can see the summers done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all
Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes Im too scared to even try
I hope I'm not led astray. This life is confusing, but hopes and ambitions prevent me from going into confusion (swinging on trees like monkeys). The fact that I may be led into this materialistic lifestyle scares me to the point of not trying sometimes.
Utter confusion feigns clarity -
Scattered delusions excuses destiny -
Its never exactly how it appears to be
Its too much for any of us who even try to see
The confused life of materialism covers up clarity. This lifestyle strays us away from what we should be doing.
Just what I believe it's saying. Tell me what you guys think.
