This is the first song which got me into Armchair Martian nearly 2 years ago, it is really great. Difficult to decide what it means though. I think it could be about him feeling like he isn't getting anywhere in his life, all he is doing is hanging around his same old friends (the communion of friends). I think in this communion they most likely take drugs or alcohol or both a lot, "I've finally got a working sense this time" makes it seem like he usually has a fuzzy head lol. There is a lot of paranoia and secrecy amongst this communion. Also, anabuse is a substance which recovering alcoholics take, it is referenced in the song as a simile: "on and on LIKE anabuse", so it could be that he does not take this substance but he is referring to the state of leaving this communion (or being in this communion) is like recovering from something which is killing you, but it hurts him to leave but it must be done.
Oh well, that is my interpretation, hope I gave you all some ideas.
OK, I have just found out something else. There are a LOT of alien references with this song. I think it is highly possible that this song was influenced by the book "Communion" which is an account of a mans alleged UFO abduction released in 1988 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communion_(book) it was a best-seller so it is very possible that Jon Snodgrass read it. Communion (the song) was recorded in 1995 I think.
So anyway, I am going to read this book and see if there are any more references.

Here is some further interpretation of this...
Here is some further interpretation of this song which back up the fact it is based on aliens:
"hiding out is all you've ever done
hiding out just four stops from the sun"
>
Four stops from the sun = MARS!!!
"and i hide out half the year blocked by the sun"
>
aliens hiding from us
"but we're all martians now"
>
martians...
So, I think that this song is pretty much all about aliens, and I will post again if I uncover any extra information. Kind of thought this song was deeper than just about aliens, so don't entirely disregard my first comment!
