well personally i think it's about a drug addiction. maybe even one the narrator picked up through a relationship- hence the line "How all you friends adore your sudden glory", which could be a result from the drugs, and "all the times we made believe a story", but the narrator seems to not be able to escape the addiction even though 'he' wants to "run away from it all".
i dunno, its just what i've always thought about it.
