This reminds me of Pastor Martin Niemoller's quote

'In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me – and by that time no one was left to speak up.'

Just that gradually the world is getting more and more screwed up, and more people are dying, and no-one is singing their blues, or speaking up for them, because they're too busy enjoying their own happy lives (with all their silk linings) and eventually there's no-one left to speak for them or sing their blues when they finally get destroyed too. Creepy but powerful.
