Very sad scene. It's pretty clear that Pilate tries everything he can to save Jesus. He didn't want to have Christ killed, but in the end, he had no choice.

Barry Dennen sang the part so well in the Original London cast. Unforgettable.
Gary Oldman also played him magnificently in the 1999 Jesus movie.
